McCarthy has been selected by the Division of Blood Disorders, National Center on Birth Defects and Developmental Disabilities, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (DBD/NCBDDD/CDC), and the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute, National Institutes of Health (NHLBI/NIH), to serve as a steering committee member for the development of a national registry and surveillance system on hemoglobinopathies (RuSH). The system will focus on hemoglobinopathies such as sickle cell disease and thalassemia because of their public health importance nationally and globally. Started December 3, 2008.
